Short Film Studies Symposium

Presented by Minimalen, in collaboration with Midtnorsk Filmsenter, Cynthia Felando, and Intellect Journals.

The symposium is chaired by Short Film Studies editor Cynthia Felando.

This year’s Symposium focuses on three of the most influential French short films in cinema history: Albert Lamorisse’s The Red Balloon, Jean Vigo’s Zéro de conduite, and Alain Resnais’ Night and Fog. The Red Balloon is screened here, while the two latter films are presented in the subsequent programme. The symposium is led by editor Cynthia Felando.

The discussion of The Red Balloon is grounded in Cynthia Felando’s ongoing book project on the film for the BFI Classics series. Cynthia Felando: - This might be the most recognizable short (or long) film on the planet. It’s definitely one of the most cherished. Since it premiered at Cannes in 1956, viewers of all ages have appreciated its simple story and breathtaking beauty, with an irresistible musical score. An almost entirely visual film, Balloon is about a little boy who discovers a gorgeous red balloon tethered to a light post and rescues it. Then, when the balloon reveals it has a life of its own, the two pal around together for a couple of days in Paris. Their loyalty to each other is fierce, until the bitter and then hopeful ending, which reporters said brought tears to the eyes of those who first saw it at Cannes. Critics have called it a ‘cinematic landmark’, an example of ‘timeless magic’, and ‘one of the most beloved films of all time’. In addition to its Short Film Palme d’or at Cannes, it won the Academy Award for the Best Feature Screenplay despite that it has almost no dialogue. For the classic short film canon, The Red Balloon is in the top spot.

As in previous years, there will be ample opportunity for audience participation and discussion. The symposium offers an inspiring opportunity for anyone wishing to understand what makes the short film a distinctive and powerful artistic form—and serves as an academic shot of energy for filmmakers at all levels.

Short Film Studies is a peer-reviewed journal published by Intellect, dedicated to advancing scholarship that reflects the short film’s historical significance, growing recognition, and diversity within today’s media landscape. Each issue focuses on carefully curated short films, occasionally including key works by directors with substantial short film practices.
